Objections To The VETO
Here's some discussion of the various objections people have raised to the idea the the VETO, and some answers to those concerns...
If you'd like to discuss any aspect of the idea, or raise a new objection, you can contact me on Twitter.
It's Too Late
I know many people are pessimistic about the world, and our chances of survival... It's understandable.
But negativity doesn't get stuff done. The best way to ensure failure is to do nothing.
VETO is Not Enough
It is a limited, and fairly blunt, tool for holding government to account, but it has the following advantages:
- It's simple, and easy to explain and understand.
- It's democratic, reasonable and fair.
- It's difficult to argue against.
In a system where the majority of people have no say, the VETO is a peaceful revolution, giving them a much needed voice.
Too Many Referenda
The government, if it believes the public do agree with an action that has been stopped by VETO, can call a referendum to make that final decision.
So there inevitably would be an increase in the number of referenda taking place.
There would potentially be too many referenda required for the traditional system to be appropriate or affordable, but I think this is a problem that can be solved by technology...
More thoughts on this in due course, but it could involve open-sourced blockchain technology...
Demographic Clashes
As we're now a multi-cultural society, some have suggested this would stop the system from working somehow.
If anyone would like to offer a substantial reason why this is a problem, I'll add it here.
Government Won't Allow It
They certainly won't enact the VETO without a struggle. They like having absolute power and have gone to great lengths to obtain it.
We have to be determined. It's up to us to give them the incentives they need, peacefully.
Ultimately, everyone would benefit from it, even the ruling elites. Too much power corrupts.
How we persuade the government to enact this is an open subject, but the page on protests describes some ideas.
The first stage is to know what you want. How to get it is the next discussion...
