VETO
The right to stop government when it's wrong.

Details...

Scope Of The VETO

The VETO is simply a legal mechanism that gives the public a way to say NO!

It would give people a way to stop any activity of government, or any statutory body, or to suspend any statute from being applied.

It does not give people the ability to demand something positive, like "free-money". It can only be used to stop things.

The VETO would discourage government from passing unpopular legislation, knowing people could simply VETO it within a few days or weeks.

It would provide the incentive (for government to do what the people actually want) that is currently lacking.

Anonymous, but verified

As part of the legislative process of setting up the VETO, we would create an open-source, cryptographically-secure petition website for verified citizens.

People would be able to sign-up to the website and prove their identity, but identity information would not be visible to any third party.

It would work in a way similar to cryptocurrency wallets, where a private-key held only by the user would secure their data and enable them to verify their vote is counted.

No one would be able to determine the identity of any petitioner, but also no one whould be able to vote multiple times.

How To Order A VETO

A VETO can be started and completed solely by the public, without it having to go through any branch of government, such as the courts.

Anyone can start a petition to VETO a policy.

Anyone with an account can then sign the petition, anonymously and securely.

When a petition reaches the threshold, it's demands are immediately legally-binding.

At this point the website will automatically inform the government of the order.

Petition Threshold

There are about 50 million registered voters in the UK (ONS).

Five percent (5%) of this is 2.5 million.

This threshold figure is open to discussion.

Government's Remedy: Referendum

If government wishes to re-instate anything that has been stopped by VETO, it has one recourse: A national referendum.

So, the government would still have the chance to make it's case and explain why the policy is a good one, if it truly believes it is.

Either way, the VETO gives the public the final-say in important matters.

Exact Legal Wording

This section will provide the exact legal wording required in the new act of parliament... To be determined.
